Max is the famous main character in this story.  He wears his wolf suit and acts wild.  Children can relate to naughty Max (although they would never be that bad).  He ends up being sent to his room with no supper.  In his imagination, Max travels to an land of monsters that he tames by staring into their eyes.  Children delight when Max has control over the wild things, and when he finally gets to eat his supper.
