Frog and Toad books are beginning reader chapter books, and children are so excited when they can finally read at this level.  You know, a chapter book is SO much better than a picture book at a certain reading stage!  :-)   This series of books are about level 18-20 or K+ for leveled reading. Book levels may be checked on many sites, including the Scholastic Book Wizard page.  On the Scholastic page, the level type can be changed to DRA, Guided Reading, Grade Level, or Lexile Measure.  Whichever is selected needs to be “set” before finding the level, and can be immediately changed to find the level a different way.  The grade level for this book is 2.2, which means second grade, second month.

Frog and Toad All Year is a collection of five stories (chapters) beginning and ending with winter.  The stories are in correct order for the seasons.  The first story finds Frog and Toad sledding, and ends with a crash.  The second story tells how Frog knows when spring has arrived.  The third story has Toad covered with ice cream so much he scares the other animals, but it ends well.   In the fourth story, both friends secretly rake the lawn for each other and don’t realize the wind ruins all their work, which is a good chance to discuss inferring.  In the last story, Frog is late to Toad’s house on Christmas, which causes Toad to worry.  Frog was just wrapping Toad’s gift, however, and all ends well.

Arnold Lobel is one of my very favorite authors because the stories require some inferring to understand as he doesn’t talk down to children.  There is always a story problem that is humorous and adventurous.  Boys can relate to his stories, which isn’t always true of early reading books.  Here is a link to an author study page about Arnold Lobel from the University of Missouri.  Here is a link to a page of frog and toad links, as well.
