Night in the Country is by Cynthia Rylant, who is the author of over 100 books for children.

I’m thinking soon we will be sleeping with windows open after having them shut during the cold winter nights.  Children will again have to get used to the sounds of nature outside of the house.  This book is a great bedtime story and provides some information about sounds heard during the night.  This book can reassure children about night noises, and can be read again and again as it has beautiful, colorful pictures.  It is best to discuss these kinds of things a few weeks before opening the window as it is easier to be proactive.

This link is to an online activity.  Match the sounds to twenty animals, and the numbers change color when the anwer is correct. This activity is from Kids’ Planet.  The more children understand about possible night noises the more secure they will feel.

This link goes to a game where two eyes are visible, and the “light” can be turned on to see the animal. Animal sounds are included.  This activity is from www.Babygamer.com.

There is nothing in the dark that isn’t there in the light!  Carolyn
