Caldecott Medal Book

The House in the Night is a wonderful and adventurous story that is completely illustrated in black, gray, white, and gold.   The print is large and the vocabulary is simple, yet there are complex ideas for children to discuss like the sun shines on the moon so the moon will shine.  The book helps take the fear out of nighttime.  It is the story of a girl who bravely stays home alone and flies on a bird through the night, arriving back home before her parents.  The story is an “in and out” story, or a story that happens in a certain order, has an interesting middle portion, and then reverses the beginning order near the end.  It is reassuring and sweet.  This book makes a great bedtime story.
