This book may not be a favorite among other Adler books, but it provides a excellent view of the story elements of problem and solution. My free lesson includes a printable PDF page with Problem Solution bookmarks, to be used at school or at home. Because this story is about someone cheating on a game at a birthday party, children relate strongly especially at the point the problem becomes obvious and when the solution is found. This story can be an anchor story for determining the story elements of problem and solution. It is great practice for children to learn to identify these story elements to enhance their own writing skills. Literacy bookmarks are used in school during guided reading groups, and your child may have had some experience with them. No writing is required, but noticing different points in the story means the reader must pay attention to the story. Thinking is required, which is always good when reading.
This links to a review of this book by a 7 year old in the Spaghetti Book Club. He drew his own picture to accompany his review. The text is blue on a black background so it is a little difficult to read, but if you click the words will turn white.
Happy reading, Carolyn
