Book 42: Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians, about just right books

Goldilocks and 3 librariansGoldie Socks and the Three Libearians

by Jackie Mims Hopkins

This story is not only for children, but also helps parents understand what “just right book” reading is all about.  Goldie Socks, deep in the enchanted forest, is looking for a good read.  She tries out baby bear’s books, mama bear’s books, and papa bear’s books.  She finds just the right one!  The story ends with Goldie and the three bears reading together.

Parents, you will remember the five finger rule for whether or not to read a book from your own school days.  When reading one page, if you put down one finger for each word you can’t read and end up with five fingers down, the book is too difficult.  Four or less and context clues and paying attention while reading will help and you will be able to read the book.  I remember applying this technique in elementary school.  Although teachers at school don’t let children choose too many books outside of their reading levels, this good old rule (covered in this story) still works.
