Jungle Drums
written and illustrated by Graeme Base
Jungle Drums is a story about being happy with your size and appearance, as well as liking yourself. It is colorful and appealing to children who will be engrossed in the story and not realize it has a moral (at first). Littlest Warthog is not happy that he isn’t big or decorated like other jungle animals. He receives a magic set of drums he plays through the night with unanticipated results. The first time, all of the plain animals (except him) get stripes and spots and other decorations, and the other animals become plain. That wasn’t what he was wishing for, though. Another night of playing the magic drums also has some strange results. Finally, in the end, after another night of pounding on the drums, everyone is the way they were in the beginning. However, Littlest Warthog is happy with himself and the animals have new ways of including everyone in the fun of the annual Grand Parade.
Graeme Base has included some interesting tips at the end of the book to make re-reading the story even more fun. He mentions specific things to watch for hiding in the pictures during future readings. Also, there is a pronunciation guide for the animals names at the back of the book. Books that can be re-read are the best kind if buying or giving as a gift, and this is such a book.
