Listen to the sounds of spring peeper frogs

When walking near ponds in April and May, it is easy for children to think they are hearing the sounds of birds when in fact the loudest chorus of sounds are from several kinds of frogs.  If children think they hear birds, as them where the birds are singing?  Looking closely at the water for a few minutes will show bubbles and frog heads peeping up, and it is obvious that the frogs are calling to each other at this time of year.  Minnesota has eleven species of frogs and three species of toads.

While adult field guides are difficult for children to use, books by Diane L. Burns may be used as field guides for children.  Try to notice just one or two frogs or sounds to look up after a walk, as trying to notice too many things at a time can be confusing.

Here are 6 seconds of April pond (frog) sounds in Minnesota:

Enjoy the spring sounds!
