by Hans de Beer, author and illustrator

Little Polar Bear and the Whales is an animal fiction story because the animals speak and have an adventurous day.  The story begins with Little Polar Bear (Lars) going to meet some beluga whales and go fishing.  Along the way he meets a cormorant named Conrad.  They find the whales in a big bay when suddenly a whaling ship appears and they meet Bella, a big whale who has been being chased for days.  Lars does some clever thinking and gets all the whales hidden in a smaller bay behind some glaciers.  However, an avalanche of ice causes another problem, and the whales are trapped.  Lars has another clever idea, but it requires the help of his parents.  Conrad flies to find them, and everyone works together to create a way out of the bay for the whales that you won’t be able to guess.  This story has excitement, dialogue, and the little bear becomes the hero, which will all appeal to children who hear the story.
