I Don’t Like to Read! by Nancy Carlson

Petunia by Roger Duvoisin

and Morris Goes to School by B. Wiseman

These three books would be good to read to reluctant readers about this time of year, spring, when reading homework may become a struggle in first grade.   In each story, the point is that learning to read is important.  Nancy Carlson is a current children’s book author, and I Don’t Like to Read was published in 2007.  The protagonist is Henry who finds during a literary “emergency” that he can read.  The adults in Henry’s life are patient with him until he figures out he does want to read.

Petunia was first published in 1950, and it has recently been published again several times.  Petunia  is a goose who finds a book, thinks it makes her wise, and carries it around giving the other farmyard animals advice.  The results are comical and point out why it is good to really understand what you read.

Morris Goes to School delights children as it is a funny enough story to make them laugh.  Morris can’t count, doesn’t fit in his desk, and even doesn’t know which restroom is for the boys.  Of course, at the end, Morris learns and children listening to the story are relieved.  This is an early reader book which a reluctant reader may wish to try to read independently because of the humor.  Read part of the book at this link.
