Book 270: Martin’s Dream by Jane Kurtz

Martin's Dream by Jane KurtzMartin’s Dream

by Jane Kurtz, illustrated by Amy June Bates

Martin’s Dream is an easy reader book that could also be used as a read-aloud for MLK studies.  It is a Ready-to-Read Level 1 book as it has repetition, familiar words, and simple sentences.  The double page spreads have one larger picture and words on only one side.  However, this book tells the story of the events of 1963 well.  A really nice sentence in the book says, “When things are fair everywhere, then people will be free.”  That is a profound sentence just thinking about the world events of 2011, much less past efforts.  Even a young child can understand this story and message.

If you have access to this book (or even if you have some other MLK books) the following free work page I made could be used as a follow-up.
