Book 326: The Three Little Dassies, by Jan Brett

by Jan Brett

This adaptation of the three little pigs by Jan Brett takes place in South Africa.  After being inspired by adorable little rock dassies while camping in Namibia, she wrote this story. Mimbi, Pimbi, and Timbi wave good-bye to the parents as do the three little pigs, but they have an eagle–not a fox–to avoid.  Real dassies have fur and look something like a walking koala, apparently.

My free printable does not require the book for use, but reading this variation to children will help them think of their own adaptions of the story. Other variations of the 3 pigs story would also be good to have on hand to show children how stories can be changed and rewritten by different authors.

This free printable has several different animals stick puppets that could be taped on craft sticks to allow children to practice retelling or making up their own stories about the 3 little pigs.  There is a writing frame with prompts for emergent writers to add to and thereby write their own story variations.

Thanks for reading, Carolyn

Are the pictures of this book as stunning as Jan Brett’s other books?

  2. Christy, the photos are stunning but not cute in the way animals can be. The photo in the back of the book showed an adorable real dassie. The clothing on the eagle wasn’t appealing to me. I like Jan Brett’s other books better! This was the only book by Brett chhecked in at our tiny town’s library at the cabin last week!

  3. I haven’t read this book by Brett. Don’t you think she must have a fascinating life with all the traveling she does for her stories? She is one author I’d love to meet. Thanks for the freebie!

  4. Jackie, this was the only Brett book I could get that day. I wasn’t sure if I could make a printable for it. There is no dassies clip art. I was going to post it on the Virtual book club but it will be a blogger day of silence, so I will link these and my others on the 18th.
