Are You My Mother?
by P.D. Eastman
Today I was very happy to be the guest blogger on the Teacher to Teacher blog, for Mother’s Day:
This book always comes to my first grade teacher mind for Mother’s Day. This book is silly but children take it seriously and also get a kick out of the story. A baby bird wakes up and can’t find its mother, so it goes looking for animals and things that could possibly be its mother. The children know better and don’t get too worried for the baby bird who even wonders if a machine (a crane) is its mother. The children can usually read this book themselves by this time of the year in first grade, and so enjoy that aspect of being grown-up enough to read the story. They also really like this book, although it doesn’t seem to be one they would like so very much. Whatever, the children like it and it fits the theme of Mother’s Day. There are many sweeter stories about mothers, but this one seems to tell the children that no matter what, mothers will always be able to find them.
