by Peter Roop, Peter E. Hanson (Illustrator), Connie Roop

This book is a favorite of second graders and appeals to children in grades 1-3 because a child in this story saves the day.   Children who have seen or live by lighthouses may especially be able to imagine this story.  This is historical fiction from 1856.  Abbie’s father has to leave to get supplies, leaving her in charge of keeping the lighthouse fires burning.  A huge storm prevents the return of her father for four weeks.  Abbie keeps those fires burning even though she must get up during the night, scrapes ice from the windows, and climb steps to the towers over and over.  She also saves the family’s only source of food, their chickens, by rescuing them from a huge wave.  This book helps children understand history.   This is a link to a free parent guide based on this book from Verizon Thinkfinity, free.
